ToggleWhat is an QLED TV?
QLED is short for Quantum dot light-emitting diodes. If you see QLED marked on your TV, This means that one is an LED TV that has quantum dot layers. This enhances everything for you like the brightness of images and colors. It comes in up to 90 inches in size. It has the best viewing angles. Its weight is also light, and thinner as compared o OLED and LED. It consumes less power.
More Detail
QLED TVs use RGB but in different ways. It adds a slice of green and red nanocrystals between the blue backlight and the LCD layer. Red, green, and blue colors combined then create a very brighter and whiter backlight. Now, It is clear that What is an QLED TV?
Hows it works?
- It is a microscopic molecule when hit by light and emits its color light. In this, the dots are on the film, and then the light hits on it with an LED backlight. This light then travels through many other layers including the LCD layer to produce a picture on the screen.
- It uses six layers to produce an image. These are the backlight panel, TFT array, polarising filter, color filter glass, quantum dots color filter, and polarising filter. It uses two types of dots. The smallest dots are used to produce blue color and the largest ones are used to focus especially on red color.
How many different sizes are available in an QLED TV?
- 32 inch
- 43 inch
- 50 inch
- 55 inch
- 58 inch
- 65 inch
- 75 inch
- 82 inch
- 85 inch
- 98 inch
What are quantum dots?
You read the word quantum dots in the above section, quantum dots are the array of smaller dots that are of different sizes, and when energy is applied, it produces light. These dots have a size ranging from 1 to 3nm. The smaller dots are blue color and the larger dots for red. Every quantum dot is dedicated to a specific color, So it produces more bright and precise colors.
Benefits of QLED
Color Accuracy
Higher Brightness
The addition of quantum makes it brighter. It uses nanocrystalline that has better optical properties than conventional LCDs. It increases visibility by 30%. Thus making it brighter.
Contrast Ratio
Contrast ratio has the ability to display deep natural blacks which is not possible in OLED. Its Contrast ratio is better because it controls the light emitted via individual quantum dots.
Thinner and lighter panel
QLED is used on large scale because of its thinner and lighter panel. You may hear of curved QLEDs. It is possible due to the flexibility and thinnest of the QLED. It does not need to sacrifice for size.
Longer Life
If you compare OLED with QLED the main difference is the life span of both TVs. QLED has longer life as compared to OLED. As you know that OLEDs are sensitive to water and get damaged easily. On the other hand, QLES is based on LCD technology, So its life is longer.
Energy Efficient
In the previous article, you learn that OLEDs are energy efficient, but QLEDs are more energy efficient than OLEDs. It saves 20 % of your power for you. Quantum dots produce more light and thus create more brightness and so it requires less energy. It produces light very precisely, So this is one of the reasons that it uses less power.
No Screen Burn-in
QLED has no screen burn-in as other types of technology TVs have. You can watch 24 *7 news or movies without any worry of screen burn-in. You can play video games for an entire day.
Disadvantages of QLED
Sometimes Contrast Ration not good
Poor Viewing Angle
QLED provides a poorer viewing angle. It is able to show images from many different angles but the quality of the image is decreased as compared to images showing from the center of the screen.
Response Time
Sometimes, the response time of QLED is not as good as OLED is providing us. It requires a high frame rate.
It takes all the drawbacks of LCD
QLED is using the technology of LCD. So it inherits all the drawbacks of LCD too. It has a limited contrast ratio and slower pixel response time as compared to OLED.
Blue dots are not Accurate
Blue color QLED has less purity. Blue dots require precise and accurate timing to control due to their small size.
Not good for Home theater
OLED TVs are recommended for home theater. You can use it in the living room and the bedroom. OLED provides better blacks as compared to QLED. You can use OLED or LED for home theater. It is not good in providing you with a cinema-like experience. As you know it is not providing good view angles, so any person sitting on the sides is not able to enjoy and see properly.
Uses backlights
QLEDs do not produce light by themself, It uses a backlight to illuminate the lights. So some energy is lost in this process and consumes more power.
Conclusion
QLED TVs are best suitable for use in the bedroom and living room but not in the home theater. The reason why it is not used in home theater is that it is not able to produce pure black level. It is suffering from poor viewing angles. You can go for OLED for home theater. For gaming purposes, QLEDs are not suitable. Its Contrast ratio is good.
